Pigmentation spots

Understand causes, target imbalances, prevent new spots

Pigmentation spots do not appear overnight – and they do not disappear overnight. They are the result of an overproduction of melanin, triggered by UV radiation, hormonal changes, or inflammation. Understanding this is the first step to proper care.

Targeted care for pigmentation spots inhibits melanin production, visibly lightens existing discolorations, and prevents new ones – with active ingredients that interrupt the process at various points, and consistent sun protection as the foundation.

Brighten existing spots

Melanin-inhibiting active ingredients like Vitamin C and Niacinamid visibly even out existing pigmentation.

Prevent new spots

Without daily sun protection, brightening care is ineffective. SPF 50 daily is prevention and protection.

Even out skin tone

Uneven pigmentation can be harmonized in the long term through targeted care and gentle exfoliation.

Pigmentation spots develop over years of UV exposure – they fade with consistent care and protection, not overnight.

Causes & Melanin Formation

How pigmentation spots develop – and why some skin is more prone

Melanin is the pigment of the skin – and it serves an important protective function. Under UV radiation, the skin produces more melanin to protect deeper layers. In some skin types or under certain conditions, this reaction gets out of balance: too much melanin is produced and unevenly distributed in certain areas.

UV radiation is the most common trigger – which is why age spots mainly appear on sun-exposed areas like the face, décolleté, and hands. Hormonal changes – especially due to contraceptives or during pregnancy – can trigger melasma, a more even but stubborn form of hyperpigmentation. Inflammations like pimples leave dark spots through post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Important to know: pigment spots are very sensitive to UV. Any sun exposure without protection intensifies existing spots and causes new ones – even in winter.

Brightening active ingredients & mechanisms

Which active ingredients truly brighten – and how they work

Brightening active ingredients intervene in melanin production – but at different points. That’s why a combination of several active ingredients works significantly better than a single ingredient in high concentration.

Vitamin C inhibits the enzyme tyrosinase, which controls melanin synthesis, and oxidizes existing melanin. Niacinamid prevents melanin from being transported from melanocytes to skin cells – the result: a more even skin tone. Tranexamic acid is especially effective for melasma and hormone-related pigmentation.

Additionally: AHA acids accelerate cell renewal and remove pigmented cells faster at the surface. The combination of melanin-inhibiting active ingredients and regular exfoliation shows the fastest visible results. Patience is still necessary: four to eight weeks of consistent use before visible improvements occur.

Prevention & Sun Protection

Sun protection as a foundation – why everything else is less effective without SPF

The most effective active ingredient against pigmentation spots is not a serum – it is sun protection. UV radiation is the main trigger and amplifier of hyperpigmentation. Using brightening ingredients without sun protection fights against a process that UV reignites daily.

Daily Sun protection SPF 50 is mandatory for pigmentation spots – not only in summer but all year round. UVA radiation penetrates through clouds and window glass. A broad-spectrum sun protection that covers both UVA and UVB is the foundation of every treatment.

The most effective routine for pigmentation spots: Vitamin C serum in the morning – sun protection SPF 50. Brightening serum with Niacinamid or tranexamic acid in the evening – gentle peeling once or twice a week. Consistency over weeks beats any one-time intensive treatment.
