How to adjust your skincare to the change of season
It is that time again. Just recently, there were long, hot summer days of over 30 degrees and muggy nights when restful sleep was almost impossible. Then one morning I wake up, it is still dim outside, and the thermometer shows just ten degrees. Autumn is here! 🍂
With my combination skin, this abrupt change often shows up faster than it does in my wardrobe. After cleansing, it suddenly feels tight for longer, my cheeks feel drier, while the T-zone continues to shine. Sometimes it simply seems more unsettled than it did just a few days ago. Perhaps you know that feeling too?
That is why the BEAUTYSTORE team looked at which adjustments make sense and are easy to implement when transitioning into autumn. Instead of hastily changing your tried-and-tested routine, add to it step by step. This allows you to observe for a few days how your skin reacts to each individual change.

Why your skin may feel different in autumn
Now, cool, damp mornings alternate with late-summer warmth at midday and noticeably cooler evenings. Increasingly heated rooms with dry air add to this.

Under these conditions, the skin can lose more moisture and feel tighter, drier or more sensitive. How noticeable this is depends on your skin type, your skin's current condition and your existing skincare routine.
Normal skin often continues to cope well with its usual routine. Dry and mature skin with increasing dryness may need additional lipids or a richer texture sooner.
Sensitive skin may react with redness, burning or rough patches. Oily, blemish-prone skin can also be lacking in moisture
: More shine does not automatically mean that your skin is not lacking moisture. With combination skin, it is especially worthwhile to look at the cheeks and T-zone separately.

Start with cleansing
First, pay attention to how your skin feels immediately after cleansing. Does it feel tight for longer than a brief moment? Does it feel rougher or start to itch? Then your cleanser may currently be too harsh. Water that is too hot during cleansing and vigorous rubbing can intensify this feeling. Lukewarm water and gently patting your skin dry are the simplest first adjustments.
If you have normal, oily or blemish-prone skin, you do not need to replace your cleansing gel preventively in autumn. If it is suitable for your skin type and your skin feels neither dry nor irritated afterwards, you can continue using it. A mild, low-foaming gel such as Comfort Zone’s Essential Face Wash may be a good choice.
For combination skin, cleansing should remove excess sebum from the T-zone without drying out the drier cheeks further. Consider both whether the product is suitable for combination skin and how the different areas of your face respond after cleansing. If your cheeks in particular feel tight, a gentler cleanser may be advisable—even if your forehead, nose and chin still feel oilier.
If you have worn make-up or sunscreen during the day, you should remove both thoroughly yet gently in the evening. This is particularly important for waterproof products and the sensitive eye area. Depending on your make-up, skin type and personal needs, an oil-based or oil-free make-up remover may be suitable. Avoid rubbing vigorously and make sure the product is suitable for the area of application. This is especially gentle on sensitive areas such as the eye area. Then cleanse your face with a cleanser suited to your skin type and its current condition. Without make-up or waterproof sunscreen, one thorough cleansing step may be sufficient.
Moisture as a base, with richer care only when needed
In the morning after cleansing, apply a lightweight serum with Hyaluronic Acid or Glycerin. Follow with your usual day cream, which helps reduce moisture loss throughout the day.
If your skin still feels tight in the evening despite using serum and cream, adjust your evening skincare routine first. A richer cream can provide more intensive care for dry skin overnight. Observe for about a week whether it feels less dry the next morning. If the feeling of tightness persists during the day, it may also be worth adjusting your daytime skincare routine.

With combination skin, it is often sufficient to care for the drier areas, such as the cheeks, with a richer product while leaving the T-zone with a lighter texture. Oily or blemish-prone skin often needs a moisturising serum and a light cream suited to the skin type rather than rich care all over the face. If your skin is dry throughout, a richer cream can also be useful in the morning.
Mature skin may need both moisture and lipids at the same time. A gradual approach is worthwhile here: start with serum and cream, and use a facial oil only if needed and in accordance with the product’s usage recommendations. For sensitive skin, as few things as possible should be changed at the same time. If your skin burns, flakes severely or remains red, pause newly introduced or intensive products and seek professional advice if the symptoms persist.
Keep active skincare and sun protection in mind
Do you use Retinol, fruit acid peels or other intensive skincare products? Then it is worth taking a closer look at your skin when the seasons change. You should not introduce new products or change how you use them based solely on general recommendations. A beautician, dermatology professional or skin expert can assess your current skin condition and determine which skincare is genuinely suitable for it.
Even in autumn, suitable sun protection remains important – especially when using Retinol or exfoliating products. Shorter and cooler days do not mean that UV radiation is no longer present. Above all, UVA radiation reaches the skin even when the sky is cloudy and can partly penetrate office and car windows. Therefore, follow the usage instructions for the respective product and use a sufficiently high broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day.
Why hand cream and lip balm are my best friends again from now on
At the latest when I get into my cold car in the morning, I know: Autumn is here – and hand cream & lip balm are once again part of my daily routine. I simply love it when my hands and lips feel smooth and soft.
Cool air, wind and dry indoor heating air can cause the skin to lose more moisture. Hands and lips become dry quickly, rough or chapped, because they are constantly exposed to the weather. A nourishing hand cream helps keep the skin supple and prevent rough areas. For my working day, however, it needs to absorb quickly so I can carry on working immediately without leaving greasy marks on my keyboard or documents. A lip balm protects the sensitive skin on the lips and helps prevent moisture loss and chapping.

That’s why I prefer to use both regularly, before my hands and lips become dry. Because honestly: Who enjoys kissing chapped lips? 😉
An evening ritual with a touch of Italy

My absolute must-have for autumn: the Tranquillity scented candle by Comfort Zone. A guaranteed way to relax after a long, stressful day at the office – especially now that the days are getting shorter and the nights longer.

I love 💕 the scent of sweet orange and cedarwood. It immediately takes me back to my last summer holiday in Tuscany: Mediterranean landscapes, golden evening sunshine, the chirping of cicadas and the fragrant orange trees in the courtyard of our small guesthouse. It was a dream! And now I can bring that same feeling of relaxation home.
With a cup of tea, my favourite music and a good book – for me, the perfect combination to leave the working day behind, preserve a little piece of summer and make autumn feel cosy at the same time. My personal feel-good ritual for the mind and soul.

Conclusion
A smooth transition instead of a drastic change
Our recommendation: Check where your skincare routine needs adjusting. Start with cleansing and add more moisture if needed. Only introduce a richer cream if your skin still feels tight or dry and rough. Use your skin type as a guide and observe how your skin reacts to each change. Still unsure about your skin type? You can find some initial guidance in our skin type overview.
My personal favourites for the change of season are my hand and lip care favourites, which accompany me every day. For my daytime facial skincare, I am sticking with the Hydramemory Rich Sorbet Cream, which was already my trusted choice in summer. For cooler nights, I am now complementing my routine with the richer Renight Cream by Comfort Zone.
This means I do not have to replace my entire skincare routine, but can adapt it where my skin now needs a little more. A smooth transition that makes it easier to say goodbye to summer and welcome autumn in a relaxed way.
Frequently asked questions about skincare in autumn
Do I need to replace all my skincare products in autumn?
No. If your current cleansing and skincare routine still suits your skin type and your skin feels balanced with it, you can continue using it. Initially, adjust only the step where you notice a change – for example, add more moisture or use a richer evening cream.
How can I tell the difference between dry and dehydrated skin?
Dehydrated skin can feel tight, look dull and still be shiny. This condition can occur with any skin type. Dry skin, on the other hand, produces fewer skin-identical lipids and often feels rough or flaky. Skin can also be both dry and dehydrated at the same time.
How should I care for combination skin if only my cheeks feel tight?
Apply a richer product specifically to the drier cheeks and continue using a lighter texture in the T-zone. You do not have to treat the entire face in the same way. Observe for a few days whether your cheeks feel more balanced without your forehead, nose or chin becoming shinier.
Can oily or blemish-prone skin also lack moisture in autumn?
Yes. Shine and a lack of moisture can occur at the same time. A lightweight hydrating serum and a cream suited to your skin type are often more beneficial than rich skincare over the entire face. If you are trying new products or experience stronger skin reactions, a personal skin consultation is recommended.
Do I need sun protection in autumn too?
Yes, UV radiation is present even on cooler and cloudy days. Especially when using Retinol, fruit acid peels or other intensive skincare products, you should follow the directions for use and apply a suitable broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day. UVA radiation can also pass through office and car windows to some extent.
